The Swartberg Mountains The Swartberg Mountains run across the northern edge of the Klein Karoo and form the border to the Groot Karoo. They are the highest mountains in the Western Cape (the highest peak is Seweweekspoort and is 2 325 m high) and the longest range. You can enjoy magnificent scenery as you drive its spectacular and historic passes. The Swartberg Pass is one of the last great passes (in the world) built in the nineteenth century by famous engineer and road builder Thomas Bain. Meiringspoort is another spectacular drive with incredible rock formations. And Seweweekspoort pass runs through a gorge that rises up to 2 000 m on either side of the narrow road. |

The Khoi and San People The Khoi and San people were the original inhabitants of Southern Africa. The San were the hunter-gatherers, and the Khoi were nomadic herders. Today only a few groups of these people live in parts of the Kalahari. But they have left us a legacy of their rock art which depicts a courageous and tough people who could live in harmony with nature without destroying it. |
